FINDING A TEACHER

The private music lesson is a highly unique, individualized and interpersonal experience.  Because of the one-on-one interaction between student and teacher, the fit is critical.  Parents and students will want to find a teacher who can best nurture the artistic and imaginative spirit of the child while challenging them to musical exploration in a safe environment.  Finding a teacher who understands the complexities - and perhaps idiosyncrasies - of your child's learning style is really critical to success in the private lesson experience.

Parents should inquire as to the teacher's training, experience, their preferred method or technique, performance opportunities in their studio, their individual goals for their students, and any other inquiries/concerns they may have. SCVMTA's affiliation with WMTA/MTNA assures parents/prospective students of finding highly qualified music educators in their medium, whose very goal is to inspire and encourage the highest musical potential.

Some teachers offer Meet and Greets, opportunities to meet with the prospective teacher at their studio in a very informal and non-threatening format prior to being put into the schedule.  It is a chance for teacher, parent and student to discuss studio policy and to meet the new teacher.  It is an opportunity for the teacher to begin building a relationship with the prospective student, to perhaps conduct a mini-lesson to get a small sense of how the student processes information, and it is an opportunity for the parent to witness how their child will interact with this new teacher.

To assist you in finding the very best teacher for your individual needs, go to the Membership Directory under the About link.  It will be incumbent on the prospective student/parent to interview the teacher as to studio openings, etc.
